Theatron

Theatron

Theatron consists of two workshops, one on translation, attended by students enrolled in the Master's Degree Course in Philology, Literature, and History of the Ancient World, and one on staging, attended by students enrolled in the various faculties that animate Sapienza University. The translation, which is based on rigorous textual criticism, exegesis, and dramaturgical reconstruction of the work in question, is “put to the test” and its validity confirmed in the staging workshop. The work carried out by the translation workshop therefore consists of rearticulating an ancient theatrical text with a view to communicating it, first and foremost, to the students of the staging workshop, most of whom come from different educational backgrounds and, in some cases, are unfamiliar with ancient language and culture; and then to an audience of spectators who are distant, in time and space, from the translated and performed text. The spirit of Theatron, therefore, is based on communication, which, by creating a strong synergy between the two workshops, reconstructs the true nature of ancient theater, where a drama was staged in a dimension of chorality and enjoyment that was not elitist but collective.
