JAZZ GOES TO UNIVERSITY
MuSa Jazz is the area of the Musica Sapienza project open to the entire university community dedicated to African-American-inspired music, of which jazz is one of the most important and influential manifestations: it is coordinated and directed by Roberto Spadoni.
The heart of the activities is the MuSa Jazz Orchestra, a real Big Band of over twenty members, which follows the tradition of the great jazz orchestras, with wind sections – saxophones, trumpets, trombones – the rhythm section, and the participation of several vocalists: it is a workshop in which important ethical values of coexistence and community, musical and cultural enrichment, team spirit, and playing to understand, learn, and grow are developed. The MuSa Jazz Orchestra performs original and traditional pieces, well beyond the already broad boundaries of jazz, all specially arranged by the conductor for our ensemble.
But that's not all: the MuSa Jazz area also develops small and agile groups of soloists called combos – from duos to sextets – who perform in more intimate settings, with a repertoire that draws on the great masterpieces of jazz, whether they be the so-called standards or pieces by the great composers.
